As of today, Missouri based HEMCO Corp. celebrated 376 consecutive accident-free work days. “The last record for days worked without an accident that caused loss of work time was 276 days,” says Sue Hill, vice president of customer development. “So this is a big improvement!”
In 2006 HEMCO was struggling with a high MOD rating score of 1.15. The MOD rating is a multiplier designed by the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) which is applied to the premium of a qualifying insurance policy and acts as a financial incentive for loss prevention. Generally, the higher the M.O.D. rating, the higher a company’s premium will be. For example, a company with a modifier .92 will pay 92 percent of the standard premium rate and a company with a modifier of 1.20 will pay 120 percent of the standard rate.
Hill explains that the company approached its employees for incentives on ways to cut down on accidents and improve the company’s MOD rating. After mulling around ideas, the leadership decided to go straight for the stomach. The company offers a company pizza party for each month the employees go without having an injury resulting in a loss of work time. “Of course ISO 9001 safety is stressed to all employees,” says Hill. “But we use employee ideas to solve any situation where safety could be an issue.” In three short years the company has been able to improve its M.O.D. rating by .20 for a current rating of .95, and they are aiming to add another 365 working days to the record.
