Advanced Vehicle Technology Bill Could Benefit Composites

Friday, October 2, 2009

On September 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009 (HR 3246), which authorizes funding for a program of research, development, demonstration and commercial application in vehicle technologies at the Department of Energy. The goal of the Act is to reduce the use of vehicle fuels that generate high emissions.

The bill was referred to the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where it awaits further discussion and a possible companion bill introduction. “If passed, the composites industry would benefit as these materials offer the light weight, high strength, energy absorption and design flexibility necessary for building more fuel efficient vehicles that meet safety requirements,” says John Busel, director of the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) Composites Growth Initiative.
