Composites in the News Last Week

October 6, 2009

Hardwire LLC, Pocomoke City, Md., is preparing to double its already 3 million square foot facility in order to meet the growing demands within the composite armor manufacturing industry. Growth is also on the horizon for Bayer Material Science, which received a $75,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to aid in the development and testing of a new carbon nanotube reinforced polyurethane composite for wind turbine blades. And more wind is sure to blow outside of Sweetwater, Texas, as German-based E.On opened the largest wind farm, touting 627 wind turbines.

But the Lone Star State is also home to conflict. Milestone Operating, which produces carbon fiber and fiberglass underground gas lift lines, filed suit against pipe manufacturer Denbury Green. The latter company is planning a carbon dioxide pipeline on property leased by Montgomery-based Milestone, who claims the development could affect their operations and were not informed of the project properly.

However, if the parties need to drive to the courthouse, they could do so in style with Ford’s new silver limited-edition Ford Mustang. The model uses prepreg materials from U.K.-based Advanced Composites Group which comprise about half of the visual and inner panels of the car (including the hood, deck lid, and underskirts). Fittingly, only 45 models will be built to celebrate the car’s 45th anniversary. Huntsman Advanced Materials also has cause for celebration, as the Swiss-based group was honored with two Materialica awards. The company was recognized for excellence in materials technology and jointly with the Philips Holst Center in the surface and technology category.
