The weather may be getting colder, but these new composites products are hot!
GreenCore Composites is getting to the core of environmentally-friendly solutions with its NCell series of high-performance natural fiber-reinforced thermoplastics for injection molding and extrusion applications. Utilizing proprietary Microfiber Technology, NCell 40-PP is a polyolefin-based compound; and when compared to glass fibers, GreenCore says natural fibers used in NCell are renewable, biodegradable, and offer weight reduction opportunities in products due to their lower density. The product is also meant to include cost savings through reduced tooling and machine wear, as the natural fibers are non-abrasive when compared to glass, as well as energy savings during molding due to lower operating temperatures.
‘Tis the season for improvements, or so Alcan Composites thinks. They introduced a renewed AIREX T90, a structural core material for applications with high flame, smoke and toxicity (FST) requirements. Alcan focused on improving damage tolerance – raised four-fold from 2.5 percent to 10 percent – and shear strength – increased by over 30 percent. Other key features of T90 include high temperature performance, exceptional fatigue resistance, compatibility with all common resins and recyclability. The renewed version of the material has already been certified according to today’s relevant FST standards like NF, DIN, and FAR.

Oracal 975
There’s a new shaft in town, and we don’t mean a funky private detective. Convertech has unveiled composite carbon fiber shaft designs which are designed to reduce weight on wide-web air shafts. These shafts are designed for wide-web lengths and to reduce workplace injuries. The 3-inch diameter shaft is sheathed in aluminum to protect the carbon fiber and ensure maximum product life and durability. With less deflection than a typical aluminum shaft, the shaft is designed to accommodate wide web lengths and heavier loads than a typical 3-inch shaft. Right on.
If you want to accentuate your carbon fiber applications, Oracal’s Series 975 Carbon Fiber Cast is for you. The cast has a textured surface specially developed for exterior automotive accent restyling and interior applications for fine detailing. The 5.0-mil is recommended for many Carbon Fiber applications within the interior design, craft and hobby, and surface effects markets. The company says it also offers dimensional stability and conformability over uneven, arched or curved surfaces as well as flat applications.
