Composites Products Worth Seeing

February 18, 2010

We’re back from the COMPOSITES convention in Las Vegas. And if that show taught us anything, it’s that there’s always something new to find in the world of composites. Like these new products:

You wouldn’t wear it in the cold (or at all), but Sogel has a new metallic gel coat available in the North American market. It is designed as a one-step process, competing with the 3- or 4-step processes currently on the market, which the company hopes gives workers reduced application time, labor and raw materials. Sogel also claims the product can be applied without porosity using traditional airless equipment, and that it does not require a clear gel coat to protect the metallic finish from climate conditions. The product is designed for applications in the marine and transportation industries, as well as any other environments where high aesthetics and high performance are required.

Magna Exteriors and Interiors, an operating unit of Magna International Inc., hopes to drive up business with EpicBlendSMC, a new sheet molding compound (SMC) material for automotive, commercial truck, consumer and industrial market applications. The compounds are meant to provide improved manufacturing capability to support manufacturers’ efforts to help reduce weight, lower cost, consolidate parts, resist corrosion and increase design flexibility. Magna adds its SMC manufacturing process is fully automated to ensure the measurement of raw materials for each batch is consistent, which eliminates quality spikes and scrap.

Paging composites in medical, stat! Lehmann & Voss & Co. has developed high-performance thermoplastic materials under its LUVOCOM brand to provide substitutes for metals in medical applications. The company states that in medical applications, plastics have to fulfil several basic requirements in addition to physiological properties such as biocompatibility: an ability to withstand sterilization by various procedures, good resistance to media and radiation, transparency to X-rays and NMR as well as good mechanical properties, even at elevated temperatures. The company uses special additives to enhance the frictional and wear characteristics of compounds abased on plastics such as PEEK, PPS, PPSU and PEI , and also to raise the overall electrical and thermal conductivity.

Take a peek at this: Nanocyl has created a new PLASTICYL PEEK 1001 thermoplastic concentrate. The carbon nanotube material is developed for high-end electronics applications, particularly targeting OEMs who are focused on emission reduction, energy usage, and total costs. The material is designed to integrate carbon nanotubes uniformly in thermoplastic compounds. The company adds that PLASTICYL PEEK 1001 is clean, cost-competitive, and eliminates the waste and inefficiencies of carbon black and carbon fibers.
