This week, the top teams in the NBA and NHL are battling for their respective championships – and the bragging rights that go with it. In the world of composites, every week is an opportunity for companies to get some bragging rights of their own with new products.
PAM Fastening Technology has nothing to do with cooking – their business is glue. They have unveiled the HB 710 HT, an updated version of its high temperature hot melt glue gun designed for use with polyamides, polyesters and other high temperature adhesives in a variety of industries and applications. Available in an extrusion model, the hot melt applicator features a micro-processor controlled and automatic temperature reduction system, which is designed to deliver optimum amounts of adhesive on heat sensitive materials. High temperature insulation and specially designed nozzles allow maintenance of desired temperature throughout the operation. The applicator is ideal for use in a variety of industries including automotive and electrical components.
Bear with us when we say that GGB Bearing Technology has developed MegaLife XT, a line of thrust bearings with a self-lubricating sliding layer on both sides of a composite core. The sliding layer consists of a proprietary, seamless tape liner of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) blended with high-strength fillers and bonded to a core of continuously woven fiberglass encapsulated in a high-temperature epoxy resin. The company says advantages to dual sliding layers over single-sided, metal-backed thrust bearings include less care during installation and resistance to permanent deformation from impact loading. Typical applications include agricultural and construction equipment, aerial work platforms, suspension and steering linkage systems, truck liftgate systems, valves, hydraulic and air cylinders and material handling equipment.

Renishaw has upgraded its ballbar system with the QC20-W
Does your CNC need TLC? Renishaw has upgraded its ballbar system with the QC20-W, a tool for the assessment of machine tool positioning and servo control performance. The all-new design features a Renishaw-developed linear sensor and Bluetooth wireless technology, designed to allow for testing in “closed door” manufacturing, where access for wiring can raise safety and procedural issues. The new design also allows testing in three orthogonal planes through a single reference point. A single, simple hardware set up means quicker testing and the ability to produce a representative volumetric measurement of positioning accuracy. The ballbar retains the operating principle of a simple CNC circular program, and is meant to diagnose and quantify machine positioning errors, including servo mismatch, stick-slip errors, backlash, repeatability, scale mismatch and machine geometry, as well as provide an overall circularity error value.
Peek around the corner and you’ll see that Emco Industrial Plastics has a new UNITREX Polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Unitrex is a semi-crystalline high temperature thermoplastic with a relative thermal index of 480 F and a UL 94 flammability rating of V-0, meaning it exhibits low levels of smoke generation and toxic gas emission. The company says the material is chemically resistant to a wide range of organic and inorganic liquids and is insoluble in all common solvents. In addition, it is unaffected by steam and hot water and has a low moisture absorption rate.
