LORD Corporation in Dayton, Ohio was selected by Sikorsky Aircraft to help build two prototypes of the Sikorsky S-97 RAIDER helicopter. LORD will join a consortium of 35 companies and will manufacture elastomeric bearings and an Active Vibration Control System.
The S-97 helicopter is capable of speeds twice as fast as traditional helicopters and cruises at a speed of 230 mph. It will presumably be capable of both one or two man piloting as well as autonomous flight. The small helicopter can hold up to six passengers in addition to two flight crew. The first prototype is scheduled to fly in late 2013.
